Vale Paddy Denny posted 26/05/2010

It is with deep regret I inform past Superulers that Paddy Denny has passed away today.

Paddy was one of the original group of players that stared playing superules in Queensland back in the mid 1980's. Paddy played for Easts now known as Springwood Pumas and represented Queensland at numerous Carnivals and was an All Australian for the Adelaide carnival in1997. AFL Masters Queensland would like to extend it's deepest sympathy to his wife Doris and the extended Denny Family.

Country Championships Townsville Report posted 15/06/2010

The Queensland Country Championships were held on Sunday the 13 th of June at Tony Ireland Stadium hosted by the Townsville Masters. There were 4 teams competing for the trophy. Townsville Sharks have won the event for the last 9 years and where favourites to win again. Being a home game for Townsville there were plenty of players willing to participate with numbers of 54 on paper and more in the grandstand on the day. Townsville fielded 2 sides, Townsville Sharks and Townsville 2 with the other players making themselves available to support the travelling teams of Mackay/Airlie Beach and Cairns. We also had a few guys travel from Brisbane to get involved, Wolfie, Frase and Derek, jumped into the Mackay team while Ray lee joined the Townsville 2 side and Ian McKenzie helped out the Cairns team.

The first game was Townsville 2 versus Cairns, inaccurate kicking by Townsville 2 saw Cairns stay in it until the end where Townsville 2 slipped away to win 5 goals 7 to Cairns 3 straight.

The second game was between the Townsville Sharks and Mackay /Airlie, with the new recruits from Brisbane playing for Mackay/Airlie the Sharks new they would have to take things seriously; when you see Derek line up at centre half forward and Frase at full forward you have to be ready for an onslaught. However with a back line as solid as the Sharks you just knew it wouldn't be easy for the ‘Guns' to score. The backline repelled everything that came there way and the midfield took over and delivered to the forward line where Ox and Shep took turns in putting the ball through the big sticks and not the little sticks. The Sharks had 21 scoring shots to just 3 for Mackay/Airlie.

The third game was between Cairns and Mackay/Arlie. Cairns had an opportunity late in the game to kick a super goal which would have closed the score right up however Mackay/Airlie caused a turnover inside 50 and shot the ball forward and scored a late goal that put the result beyond doubt.

The fourth game was between the Townsville Sharks and Townsville 2, as this was the game between the 2 teams that hadn't lost, they were to play off for the Championship. Townsville 2 was very aware of the Sharks game plan and gave themselves every chance of causing an upset. The Sharks proved too strong and came away victors by 4 goals.

Thank you very much to the teams for travelling, it can only make Masters football strong if we have a healthy competition between the regions. The umpires were very impressed with players conduct and all the players need to be congratulated for their support of Masters footy and making the day a huge success. Thank you also to the volunteers who gave up their time to assist on the day, we know without your support it would be not have been as successful as it was.

The winner of the John Van Der Linden medal for best on ground in the final was Glenn Bailey from the Townsville Sharks, Johns family had travelled from interstate to be in Townsville and were on hand to award Glenn with the medal. Glenn also picked up the coaches award and Glenn Jackson collected the coaches award for Townsville 2. There was a trial game of over 45s which was well represented from all regions, this concept is only new to Townsville and by all accounts was well received by the players and spectators. The game will continue to be trialled at future events. Thanks to Peter Young(maggie island) for managing this game and making sure it went ahead.

Whitsundays May Day weekend report.

The breathing was heavy, the sweat was flowing and the knees sounded more like castanet's that athletes joints as the Whitsunday Bald Eagles ran onto the ground to contest the Whitsunday Shield at the Whitsunday Sportspark last Sunday. Visiting Masters AFL teams from Cairns , Townsville and Mackay were ready for action. The hair may be thinner, the waistlines may be thicker but the sparkle from the eyes and the fire in the belly was like days gone by. These descendants from the Airlie Bloods of old proudly took the field once again to do battle with their NQ visitors. Competition was fierce, rivalries were strong but friendships and mutual respect was at the forefront. Townsville Sharks eventually won the day but the local lads did themselves and their town proud. Thanks must go to the organizers of the day and the support from the junior and senior Sea Eagles committees for catering the carnival. All visiting teams commended the Bald Eagles for a well run carnival and looked forward to coming back again next year. For the local boys we have our next game at the NQ Country Championships in June. Training is each Thursday night at 6-00pm and all are welcome. Give Jack Lumby a call on 0417 628 939 and come along and have some fun.

Cairns Masters Carnival Report posted 23/03/2010

Andy " Stump" Evans reporting.

On Saturday the 20th of March, Cairns Masters hosted the annual carnival at Cazaly's stadium. The carnival saw the return of the Capricorn boys to defend the title won last year and a strong Townsville influence with Luke and some of the boys coming up. A magnificent effort considering the inpending weather event.

The weekend also saw the welcome return of the NQ Stingers team as the second Cairns masters side.

The first game saw the Cairns Mulchers vs Capricornia in a closely contested match. Both teams were willing at the ball and both defences held up under some sustained pressure. Capricorns defence was led by first game player Bruce Grundy. Bruce was judged best carnival player for the Barbarians. Cairns Mulchers was well led by Vaughn Emery and Michael ( Smudge) Smith.

Final scores, Cairns Mulchers 4.7.31 to Capricornia 1.3.9

Best players, Brett Macey, Richard Eggins, Duane Forward, Michael (Smudge) Smith, Peter Fomiatti, Vaughn Emery and Andy (Hanibal) Deslandes.

Next up was the NQ Stingers vs Capricornia with both sides showing plenty of running skills and excellent disposal skills. The Stingers showed what a bit of talk out there can do with Steef Dommers being clearly heard from all points of the ground. He was well supported by Paul (Tucky) Tuckett, Paul(Juddy) De Nittis, Mark(Smedtsy) Smedts and Matty (Goldie) Goldfinch, NQ Stingers player of the carnival.

Final scores, NQ Stingers 7.5.47 to Capricornia 1.2.8

The final saw the battle of the two Cairns teams with some outstanding football on display. The midfield battle was a sight to behold with both teams trying to out do each other in the posession stakes. NQ Stingers ran out evetual winners. Best players were, NQ Stingers, Matty Goldfinch, Mark Smedts, Paul De Nittis, Shane (Bucko) Buckley, Luke Bolden and the mighty Fish for his first carnival. Best for the Mulchers, Richard Eggins (Mulchers carnival best), Duane Forward, Michael Smith, Anthony Fields, Nathan Young who played a great game at full forward and Brett Macey, if we could get him to training, how good would he be?

Final scores NQ Stingers 5.6.36 to Mulchers 3.4.22

A big thank you to Spicey, Docker and the Capricornia boys as well as Luke and the Townsville boys for their support of our carnival.

Thanks also to Bros and Dale for organizing the weekend and to Eggy for his efforts on the track with coaching. Congratulations to Joey for his perfect coaching record of the Stingers, 2 from 2, best retire now mate while you are on top.

Whitsunday Bald Eagles news

G`day fellas,
Hope all are well since the Townsville meeting. Sorry if I have been a bit quiet but I was bitten by a white tip spider and had to do a stretch in hospital to beat the bugger. All ok now as I am finally able to have a beer or two!!
I have rounded my boys up and season 2010 is underway. I have only 8 to 10 training at present but this number should double over the next month.
As you can see we now have a direct email address for our Whitsunday Bald Eagles Masters AFL club. Please change any other email address that you may have as this will now be the most direct route to communicate with us and to get your info out to the Whitsunday lads.
We are all set to host a carnival on the Mayday long weekend. We propose to play on Sunday 2nd of May. This will allow a travel day before and after the event. As mentioned in Townsville we are keen to host a City/Country game for over 45`s, with a possibility of a 35`s game as well. We will be calling for nominations from ALL regions to make up the teams and with just an 8 week window until the event the game maybe North vs South with a line drawn below Townsville. Thus Whitsunday and below may join with any players coming from further south. This option will be guided by the number of nominations. I am open to communication. Nominations will close 7 to 10 days prior. Info on flyer.
There will be an informal dinner and drinks afterwards as well as presentations.
For those wishing to book accommodation or extend their stay and have some fun I have arrange for Airlie Beach Travel to handle bookings and questions. It is the biggest travel agent in Airlie and also one of our sponsors. I have spoken to several accommodation houses to provide special rates and these will be made available to you when Masters AFL is quoted either by phone or email. I have also arranged special rates and packages for some cruises as well. I will get a flyer out to you by midweek with suggested rates, accom, trips and info.

AFL Masters Hall of Fame.posted 9/10/2009

Queensland AFL Masters has had it's 5th inductee into the AFL Masters National Hall of Fame, Gary Mitchell was presented with his award at the Hall of Fame dinner held at Cazalys in Cairns during the AFL Masters National Carnival 1st October - 8th October, here is an overview of Gary's achievements that were acknowledged by the AFL Masters National Board

Gary has served Queensland for 15 years in a variety of roles. He first commenced as a player and attended his first Carnival in Sydney 1995. At the conclusion of the local season in 1996 he was delegated the responsibility of Zone Delegate for Easts which at that time had 12 players. From 1996 to 2000 he recruited and fostered a playing group that encouraged growth and a family friendly environment that saw the player numbers grow to 60 registered players and Easts was the first club to instigate a Masters Team (over 40's) and encourage a Masters Competition in Queensland .

In 1999 the President of Queensland Warwick Ansell nominated Gary to the Queensland Executive Committee in the Role of Registrar to create the first official records of Registered Players that fostered accountability and responsibility within the Clubs. Gary created a database of players and provided the Clubs with Team Sheets, Game Report and general administration duties. Gary also created the first website in 1997 which he still maintains and updates. Gary has continued in this capacity for 12 consecutive years in this role supporting 4 Queensland Presidents and Executive Committee members. Gary has been able to provide consistency and support in his role on the Committee to all new incoming Presidents and Treasurer's enabling a much smoother transition and confidence in the Committee. Gary also assists the Clubs with any general queries they have and is always prepared to help in any capacity.

Gary has attended many of the National Body AGMs and Carnival Preparation Meetings either with or on behalf of the Queensland President and has been instrumental in preparations for Carnivals both away or within our State assisting for the co-ordination for the Gold Coast Carnival in 2001, Cairns in 2004, Maroochydore 2006 and the Current carnival in Cairns 2009. Gary also played a major role in ensuring all players were registered for all carnivals since 2000 and assisted in the co-ordination of accommodation and uniforms and Team Management.

Gary himself has attended 8 Carnivals as a player in the Sydney Carnival in 1995, Canberra 1998, Gold Coast 2001( Captain of Div2 Masters), Melbourne 2002 (V/Capt Div1Masters), Perth 2003, Cairns 2004, Adelaide 2005 and Maroochydore 2006 which is the last year Gary played football. He came out of retirement. to attend the 2009 Carnival in Cairns.

Gary 's player achievements include Best and Fairest Player for Queensland Masters(over 40's)Competition 2004 and Runner Up for Easts Supers(over 35's)1999.

Gary 's Queensland Achievement Awards are His Life Membership awarded in 2005 and his Queensland Superman of the year 1998 Award.

In 2002 Gary represented The Allies (Rest of Australia) vs Vic Metro/Country at Optus oval as the curtain raiser to the E.J.Whitten legends game.

In 2004 he represented Australia in the 0ver 40's International Match vs Ireland played in Brisbane.

Gary has always played his footy in the spirit in which he first introduced to the Queensland website. “Footy For Fun” “Never Too Old To Play” and has been a leader both at club level and Queensland Level on and off the field. Even though Gary retired from football in 2006 he has remained on the Queensland Committee and continues to volunteer his time, knowledge and support to Masters Football.

Previous Inductees from Queensland have been

Doug Jones (1997), Tim Gleeson (2001), Alex McRae (2006) and Bruce Steensen (2008)

2009 National Carnival Cairns posted 28/11/2008

The carnival will be held from first game day Friday 2 nd October 2009 to Thursday 8 th October 2009 .

These were not our preferred dates and we would have preferred to have the usual timetable of the Sunday after the AFL Grand Final to the following Saturday but we were governed by two factors.

  1. Queensland school holidays finish the week after the AFL Grand Final and many Queenslanders holiday in Cairns . There was not enough accommodation for all our carnival participants during the first week after the AFL Grand Final (same situation as in Maroochydore in 2006).

  2. The only venue capable of holding our Presentation Night with 1200+ attendees is the Cairns Convention Centre. It has been booked out for a medical convention on the first and second Friday, Saturday and Sunday of October. The only other option was to have a huge marquee, which would have cost an additional $50 - $60 per head so the Presentation Night component would have been around $180 per head for ladies and officials and it would have added an extra $50 - $60 to player entry fees. Therefore we have booked the Cairns Convention Centre for Thursday 8 th October 2009.
